Gerrard named captain - Rio injured

05 June 2010 - 07:46

Fabio Capello's World Cup plans have been thrown into disarray after a freak knee injury saw Rio Ferdinand sent home. Ferdinand was immediately replaced with Matt Dawson whilst Steven Gerrard was named new captain for the tournament.

  • Bournemouth have bid accepted to Chelsea to sign centre-back
  • Chelsea eye move for Russian goalkeeper

  • In what comes as a huge blow to England's hopes, losing such a high profile defender such as Rio; it marks a shock return to South Africa for Dawson and a welcome return to England captaincy for Gerrard.

Gerrard was actually Fabio Capello's first captain when he took charge of England.

Ferdinand broke down with injury at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus yesterday morning and immediately was sent to doctors.

However, his World Cup is over and now Dawson is on a plane to South Africa.
