Wigan will make a transfer offer for highly rated Bristol City striker Nicky Maynard on Monday morning, as the Latics' manager Roberto Martinez and club directors have been preparing a 4 million GBP move over the weekend.

According to reports, Maynard could complete a transfer before the end of the January transfer window.

Bristol City's manager Derek McInnes admitted that talks are ongoing.

"There was contact from Wigan and the club's agreed permission for them to speak to Nicky," said Derek McInnes.

"Obviously the situation has been dragging on - I was aware of it when I came into the club. Nicky possesses the quality to play in the Premier League but ideally I would like him to work with us in the future but we haven't agreed a contract.

"We've made him an offer and the club made a decision that we would try to sell him in January to look after our investment that we paid for him a few seasons ago.

"But there are a lot of factors involved in it. The club's got to buy him, the club's got to accept the offer and then the player has got to want to go. It will hopefully all settle itself down in the next couple of days.

"Once the window closes if he is still our player, he will be part of the squad and an important part of the squad."
