Liverpool Agree Season Long Loan Deal For Lorenzo Melgarejo
Brendan Rodgers led Liverpool have come to terms with Benfica to sign defender Lorenzo Melgarejo on a season-long loan deal. The deal also provides Rodgers an option to make the move a permanent one for an additional amount of £7 million, if the temporary move proves successful.
The Paraguayan will compete with Jose Enrique for the left-back position at Anfield. He will be a valuable addition to Rodgers’ squad as the manager is keen to strengthen his defensive ranks before competing for the top-four spots this season.
The 22-year-old’s move to Liverpool depends on whether a work permit could be obtained as Melgarejo has only one senior international cap to his name.
The defender had also been linked with a move to Liverpool’s domestic rivals Arsenal and Turkish giants Fenerbahce this summer. He made 35 appearances for Benfica last season, including the Europa League final against Chelsea.
