England knocked out of World Cup

England have been knocked out of the World Cup finals in Brazil following Costa Rica's surprise win over Italy on Friday.

The Three Lions had lost their previous games to Italy and Uruguay respectively, and were dependent on the Azzuri winning the remainder of their games, and to beat the Central Americans to stand any chance of reaching the knock-out stage.

However, Costa Rica continued on their excellent World Cup campaign, as a first-half Bryan Ruiz goal was enough to seal a well deserved 1-0 win over Italy.

This is the first time England have been eliminated in the group stages of the World Cup finals since 1958.
