Manchester United are reportedly prepared to pull out of the race to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred this summer.

The Red Devils have been heavily tipped to pursue the Brazilian in recent months after arch-rivals Manchester City dropped out of the hunt for the midfielder's signature.

Despite this, they are yet to make any progress with regards to a summer move and they are currently re-considering their approach for Fred, Metro reports.

United are supposedly keen on recruit a new midfielder ahead of the summer World Cup but this is something Fred does not agree with his concentration now with the national team.

Fred, who has a £53m release clause on his contract, is also rumoured to be a transfer target for Paris Saint-Germain and they could emerge as favourites for the Brazilian this summer.

The ex-Internacional man has been with Shakhtar since the summer of 2013. He has contributed four goals and seven assists in 37 games for the club this term.
