Manchester City are reportedly among the top sides looking at a potential deal for highly-rated Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The 21-year-old caught the radar of the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid during the summer but a move never materialised with his asking price proving steep.

Owing to this, Ajax have made the decision to keep the Dutchman for the entirety of the current campaign but they are likely to consider his position when the season comes to a close.

According to the Mail, City believe they are in a strong position to acquire the player's services next summer and they are prepared to make an offer worth £50m for the Dutchman.

Cross-town rivals Manchester United have also been credited with an interest in the Dutchman, though the Citizens remain confident of prising away the former Willem II graduate.

De Jong, who is already a full international with the Netherlands, has netted twice in 19 appearances for Ajax during the ongoing campaign. He has more than three years remaining on his current deal with the club.
