The father of Lucas Torreira has revealed that Napoli were interested in signing the Arsenal midfielder and a return to the Serie A could be a possibility in the future.

The Uruguay international joined the Gunners from Sampdoria in a £26m move last summer and he has since turned into one of the signings of the Premier League campaign.

In an interview with Radio Marte, Lucas' father has confirmed that Napoli were interested in the defensive midfielder but their failure to make progress meant that the Gunners pounced on the player's services.

He added that Torreira is still fond of the Serie A, where he made a name for himself and a return to the Italian top-flight with Napoli or any other side cannot be ruled out.

"Obviously, Lucas is very fond of Italian football, where he grew up, and might return to Italy in future. You can never say never, so it's possible he could come back to this marvellous country and, why not to Napoli or another club that makes an offer?," he said.

Torreira has found himself in-and-out of the starting lineup in the second half of the season where he has struggled with fatigue but he is still regarded as a vital figure as Arsenal aim to end their two-year wait for Champions League football.
