Virgil van Dijk surprised by Liverpool contract speculation
Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk has been left bemused amid reports suggesting that he could be rewarded with a new bumper contract at Liverpool.
The Dutchman is currently on a £125,000-a-week package at the Reds and recent speculation has claimed that his salary could be bumped to around £200,000-a-week.
However, according to The Liverpool Echo, it is said that Van Dijk has been left surprised by the gossip surrounding his contract and he has no immediate need to demand a wage hike.
Van Dijk has nearly four years remaining on his current deal with the Merseyside giants but the Reds have the option of extending his stay for another 12 months through a clause on the contract.
Liverpool have made a bright start to the Premier League campaign and they are currently at the top of the league standings with a two-point advantage over Manchester City.
Next up, they are scheduled to face Newcastle United at Anfield and Van Dijk will be expected to feature at the heart of the defence. The Dutchman will be aiming to help the side secure their first clean sheet of the season.
