Smalling on the verge of Man United exit

Manchester United are close to sanctioning the permanent sale of Chris Smalling to AS Roma.

The England international was hugely impressive for the Giallorossi during his season-long loan stint last term, where he made 37 appearances.

The Serie A side have since been in negotiations with United over a permanent deal and The Athletic claims that they have finally agreed on the fee.

A package of around £18m has been finalised between the sides and the transfer could be formally completed in the next few days.

United have made just one signing in Donny van de Beek from Ajax this summer, but they could go on a late spending spree.

They are keen on signing a left-back and right-winger and the departure of Smalling could provide them additional funds to land their targets.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are currently in advanced negotiations with Porto for the services of left-back Alex Telles.

They have failed with an opening £12m bid for the Brazilian, but are expected to come up with a renewed offer.
