Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was reportedly keen on landing the signature of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa this summer.

The Red Devils ended the previous campaign on a good note by finishing in the top four and it was anticipated that they could go on a spending spree.

However, that was not the case and they ended up spending only £54m on five major signings - £40m of which went into the purchase of Donny van de Beek.

According to ESPN, Solskjaer had identified Jadon Sancho as the number one target for the summer, but the hierarchy failed to back him after learning of Borussia Dortmund's £108m price tag.

Elsewhere, Grealish was also on the Norwegian's radar, but the board refused to make an approach after getting to know the £80m asking price for the English midfielder.

United have made a dreadful beginning to the new league season and they have picked up only three points from their opening three matches. They will face Newcastle United on the road after the international break.
