Chelsea have turned their attention towards Bayer Leverkusen's Tim Steidten after failing to pursue Christoph Freund from RB Salzburg.

Earlier this week, the Blues had identified Freund as the ideal candidate for the sporting director role, and personal terms were agreed.

However, Freund made a U-turn on the decision after speaking with Salzburg. The Austrian outfit convinced him to continue with them.

As a result, the Blues are now looking at various alternatives, and according to The Guardian, Steidten is a top name on their radar.

The 43-year-old was only promoted to the sporting director role at Leverkusen this summer, but the Blues are nonetheless keen on him.

Steidten was previously a fantastic scout for the Bundesliga outfit, and the Blues believe he could be a perfect fit for their vacancy.

It remains to be seen whether they can convince Leverkusen into releasing him. It may require a significant compensation package.

Chelsea restart their Premier League campaign following the international break with an away trip to London rivals Crystal Palace.
