We want him to stay: Erik ten Hag speaks on Man Utd stars future

Ten Hag open to De Gea contract extension

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has said that he would like to keep David de Gea despite his goalkeeping blunder against West Ham United.

The Spaniard gifted the Hammers with the opening goal at the London Stadium on Sunday evening. It proved to be the match winner in the end.

Speaking after the game, Ten Hag reinstated that the club want to keep De gea by extending his contract which expires in the summer of 2023.

The Dutch head coach added that the Red Devils would not be competing for a top-four finish without the clean sheets won by the 32-year-old.

He told The Athletic: "We want him to stay and we want him to extend his contract. He has the most clean sheets in the Premier League. We would not be here in this position without him."

United have lost their last two top-flight matches but they are still one point ahead of fifth-placed with a game in hand.

Hence, they have their Champions League destiny in their own hands and need to win three of their final four games.
