Sevilla president Jose Maria Del Nido has said that he is happy with a fifth place finish in La Liga and that he is quite contended with playing UEFA Cup football next season.

At the start of the season, the Andalucian giants were expected to fight for La Liga title but a poor start to the season coupled with the resignation of coach Juande Ramos and the tragic death of defender Antonio Puerta derailed them somewhat.

At one point Sevilla were even out of contention for a top six finish but under Manolo Jiminez, they did manage to steal to the fifth place in the table. Atletico Madrid are 3 points ahead of them with a better head-to-head record with just one round of La Liga matches remaining this season.

Del Nido admits that at the start of the season, they did have a top four finish in mind and possibly something more but insists that even playing in the UEFA Cup next season would be a success in itself since this will be the fifth consecutive year hat they have featured in European club competitions.

Del Nido remarked on the club’s official website:

“It is necessary to remember that this will be the fifth consecutive year that we qualify for Europe through the front door, this time finishing fifth, with the aim to enjoy a competition that has previously given us much prestige.

"We embark on a new project, with much more scope than the previous one, in as much as before we came from nothing, and, now, we enter it having gained titles and with a motivation to win a European competition once more.”
