Man City & Liverpool want to sign Chelsea defender

Manchester City and Liverpool could go head-to-head to sign Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen during the January transfer window.

The left-back spent the previous campaign on loan with Burnley in the Championship. He was crucial to their promotion to the top-flight.

The Clarets tried to re-sign him before the summer transfer deadline last month, but Maatsen turned down the opportunity to rejoin them.

Maatsen's current deal expires in the summer of 2025 but it is reported that he could leave the Blues as early as the winter transfer window.

City and Liverpool are among keen admirers of the Dutchman, but the Blues may ideally prefer to offload him to an overseas club this winter.

Maatsen, who was recently called up for international duty, is craving for regular first-team football after his loan stint with the Clarets.

The Blues are prepared to hand him a new long-term deal, but Maatsen wants the assurance of regular playing time to extend his stay.
