Barcelona and Man Utd battle to sign Lucas Bergvall

Swedish youngster on Man Utd radar

Both Manchester United and Barcelona are hopeful that a deal can be agreed in the January transfer window to sign one of Europe's brightest prospects, Swedish international midfielder Lucas Bergvall. The 17-year-old star has been at Djurgardens since last year and has caught the eye in his opening season sufficiently to make his debut for Sweden's full national side.

Barcelona had been expected to announce a deal to sign Bergvall this month, but late interest from Man Utd appears to have derailed the Camp Nou side's move for the player. United are in the midst of a restructure, particularly in the footballing department, and have already started to construct a transfer wish list of potential new signings.

He recently made his full Sweden national team debut against Estonia, but prior to that had represented his country's youth sides. He is said to be open to a transfer to either Barca or Man Utd, but has a preference for the Premier League, according to sources close to the player.

Lucas' preferred position is as a central midfielder, but he does like to get forward and create opportunities. He is also a very good defensive player, and his height of 1.87 metres makes him a challenging prospect in the air.

Djurgardens have valued their youngster at around £22 million.
