Chelsea explain why Jadon Sancho is absent vs Newcastle

Chelsea have revealed that Jadon Sancho has not made the matchday squad against Newcastle United tonight due to illness.

The England international has not featured in the last two outings, but it was predicted that he could get the nod in the Carabao Cup fourth round against the Magpies.

However, he was nowhere to be seen in the matchday squad. The Blues have now disclosed that the winger has not made the game because of being ill.

A statement from the club's website read: "Jadon Sancho misses tonight’s Carabao Cup tie in Newcastle due to illness."

Chelsea travel to Old Trafford for Sunday's Premier League game against Manchester United. Sancho is ineligible to face his parent club.

The Blues signed Sancho on loan with an obligation to buy, provided they finish 14th or higher in the league this season.

Chelsea are currently fifth in the standings with 17 points and have a chance to break into the top four with a victory.
