Atletico want Rafael Marquez

Atletico Madrid boss Javier Aguirre has admitted that he would like to sign fellow Mexican Rafael Marquez from Barcelona after it emerged the Catalan side would allow him to leave.

Marquez is capable of playing anywhere in defence or midfield, and has become frustrated with his lack of playing opportunities at Barcelona.

Aguirre is believed to be ready to spend £7 million to land the Mexican international.

"It is not a secret to anyone that he is a very attractive player and that he is a reference point in the international game because he can play in different positions," the Atletico boss said.

"Rafa, apart from being a friend of mine, is a great player. Any coach, because I am no expection, would want him."
