Official: Eriksson leaves City

Although his departure was evident, Manchester City have officially announced that the club have parted ways with Sven-Goran Eriksson by mutual consent.

Eriksson's failure to find his name in the good books of the club's owner Thaksin Shinawatra has resulted in his sacking. Manchester City finished ninth in the league which disappointed the board, who had expected a higher league position. Although they had a poor run of form towards the end of the season they managed to qualify for the UEFA Cup, thanks to their fair play rankings.

Eriksson had brought in some quality players in the City line-up and had instilled faith into the players. The Swede was loved by the fans and they had protested the club's move to sack him. He will also leave behind the credit of being the first Manager to beat bitter rivals Manchester United home and away for the first time since 1970.

The official announcement came today morning , CEO Alistair Mackintosh said, “The Board of Directors and all at Manchester City would like to thank Sven for his efforts and contributions throughout the season and we wish him all the best for the future. Sven remains a friend of the Club.”

Eriksson said that, “I have enjoyed my time at Manchester City very much indeed and in particular, I would like to thank the fans, players and staff for their amazing support over the season. I wish the Club, and everyone associated with it, much success in the coming years.”
