Hannibal Mejbri's rise to key player or liability?

Hannibal Mejbri is one of the most exciting young talents to emerge from Manchester United’s academy in recent years. Known for his passion, flair and relentless work rate, the Tunisian midfielder has already made a name for himself in both his club career and on the international stage. His journey from the youth pitches in France to his Old Trafford debut, to his current Burnley stardom, is a story of determination and ambition.
Born in 2003, in France, Hannibal’s footballing talent was clear from an early age. He began his youth career at Paris FC before moving to AS Monaco’s academy, where he quickly gained a reputation for his technical skill and confidence on the ball. In 2019, Manchester United spotted his potential and signed him for a reported £9 million, a remarkable fee for a 16-year-old who hadn’t even made his professional debut.
From the start, it was clear that Hannibal had the qualities to develop into a significant presence in United’s midfield. What makes him so unique as a player is his combination of flair and fight. He possesses a natural ability to glide past opponents, using close control and clever footwork to create chances. Yet, unlike many creative midfielders, he also has undeniable aggression.
From the moment he arrived, Mejbri brought a spark to Burnley’s midfield. His energy, technical ability, and willingness to press opponents immediately impressed supporters. He often played as an attacking midfielder or a box-to-box number eight, linking play between defence and attack while adding a touch of flair in tight spaces. His determination and aggression off the ball also made him a perfect fit for Burnley’s transitional play.
In matches against top sides, Mejbri’s composure has stood out. He showed courage to receive the ball under pressure and the confidence to drive forward, often initiating counter-attacks. While his statistical output in terms of goals and assists hasn’t always been headline-grabbing, his influence on the rhythm of Burnley’s midfield was significant.
However, many media outlets and sports journalists have labeled Hannibal as a “liability” and “too aggressive.” Critics often highlight his tendency to dive into unnecessarily dangerous challenges that have disrupted games and affected results.
Two notable examples include the game against Stoke City in January, where Mejbri fouled right-back Junior Tchamadeu and stamped on his stomach, earning an instant red card. Another was the match against Liverpool in September, where Mejbri conceded a needless handball penalty in the closing stages - a mistake that allowed Salah to score the decisive goal.
Due to these emotional outbursts and moments of recklessness, Hannibal has frequently been scrutinised for his behaviour. Nevertheless, many fans continue to defend him, citing his technical brilliance and the vital spark he has injected into Burnley’s midfield.
