Premier League clubs circle departing Senesi

Marcos Senesi is set to leave Bournemouth on a free transfer this summer, and his situation could quickly become tied to the growing race for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke.

Van Hecke has become one of the most wanted centre-backs in the Premier League, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United all credited with interest. However, the feeling around the race is that Liverpool may now be the favourites. The Dutchman fits what they want: Premier League proven, strong in possession, aggressive in duels and still young enough at 25 to develop further. If Liverpool move decisively, they could leave their rivals looking elsewhere.

That is where Senesi becomes such an interesting option. The Argentine defender will depart Bournemouth when his contract expires, meaning clubs can sign him without paying a transfer fee. For Manchester United and Chelsea, that could be very attractive if they miss out on Van Hecke or decide Brighton's asking price is too high.

Brighton are unlikely to sell Van Hecke cheaply. He is under contract, he has had a strong season, and Brighton have a long history of demanding full value for their best players. A deal could easily move towards the £40m to £50m range, especially if Liverpool, Chelsea and United are all involved. Senesi, by contrast, would only require wages, signing-on fee and agent costs. That makes him a very different kind of opportunity.

Senesi has been one of Bournemouth's most important players this season. He has helped them keep 11 clean sheets and has been a key figure in their impressive unbeaten run. Since joining from Feyenoord in 2022, he has made well over 100 appearances for the club and has grown into a reliable Premier League centre-back.

For United, Senesi would offer experience, left-footed balance and leadership at a time when the defence still needs reshaping. With questions around several senior defenders, a free transfer could allow them to strengthen without using a huge chunk of the budget.

Chelsea may also see the logic. They have spent heavily on young players, but Senesi would bring a more mature profile. He is 29, knows the league and can play in a possession-based system. He would not be as glamorous as Van Hecke, but he could be a smart market move.

If Liverpool win the Van Hecke race, expect United and Chelsea to look very closely at Senesi. On a free transfer, he may become one of the most sensible defensive deals of the summer.
