Chelsea, Newcastle have Afonso Moreira interest

Chelsea are being linked with a summer move for Afonso Moreira, with the Lyon winger emerging as another young attacking talent on the club's radar. The 21-year-old Portuguese forward has enjoyed a strong breakthrough season in France and is starting to attract serious Premier League attention.
Chelsea have built much of their recruitment model around identifying players before they become impossible to sign, and Moreira fits that idea perfectly. He is quick, technical, left-sided and still developing, but already producing enough end product to make clubs take notice.
Moreira joined Lyon from Sporting CP in 2025 and has made a fast impression. Across the current season, he has recorded around four goals and seven assists in Ligue 1, while also adding two goals and two assists in European competition. Those numbers are impressive for a player in his first full campaign at this level, especially as he has not always been a guaranteed starter. He has shown he can impact games from the beginning or from the bench, which is exactly the sort of profile big clubs like to monitor.
Chelsea's interest makes sense when looking at their wide options. The club have plenty of attacking players, but there is still room for a natural winger who can beat defenders, create chances and stretch matches late on. Moreira is not yet the finished article, but he has the raw ingredients Chelsea tend to value: pace, flair, age, resale potential and room for tactical development.
The fee could be interesting. Lyon signed him for a modest amount, but his value has risen quickly. Reports suggest he could now cost around €25m, although Lyon may try to protect themselves by offering him a new contract. If they succeed, the asking price could climb. If financial pressure becomes a factor, Chelsea may see an opportunity to move before the market gets crowded.
They are not alone. Newcastle have also been credited with interest, while Manchester United have been linked in Portugal. Bundesliga clubs are also believed to be watching him, which means Chelsea would need to move early if they decide he is a serious target.
For Moreira, the next step will be choosing the right pathway. Chelsea can offer profile, money and a long-term project, but he will want minutes. That could make a structured plan important, whether that means first-team integration, a loan, or a BlueCo route through Strasbourg.
