Man Utd make late approach for Aston Villa star

Manchester United have made a late approach for Aston Villa left-back Ian Maatsen, according to Sky Sports.

The Red Devils currently have Luke Shaw as their undisputed left-back, but they need some cover in the department.

With the extra workload of the Champions League, United are wary about the lack of depth, considering Shaw's injury record.

Patrick Dorgu has been defensively vulnerable as a deputy.

Sky Sports today claim that the Red Devils made an enquiry for Maatsen this week, but it was immediately snubbed by Villa.

Villa have already lost several key stars, including Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans, and they have no plans to sell Maatsen.

Instead, they are planning to open talks with the Dutchman. The club are willing to hand him a new long-term deal with a pay rise.

Villa made a dreadful start to the Premier League campaign with a 4-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion on the road, and will aim to make amends when Arsenal visit Villa Park in Monday's encounter.
