Wenger confident of defensive options

Wenger confident of defensive options

13 October 2011 - 17:23

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is confident that his squad has sufficient depth to make up for the loss of Bacary Sagna through injury.

  • Chelsea ready new contract for star midfielder
  • Chelsea make first move to sign Xabi Alonso
  • Sagna fractured his leg in the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham and will miss a minimum of three months of action.

Youngster Carl Jenkinson is most likely to take his place in defence, with Laurent Koscielny also a possible option.

Wenger believes that these players will more than suffice when they travel to Sunderland this weekend.

He told the club’s official website: “I think it is more down to Jenkinson because [Francis] Coquelin has never been at ease as a right back.

“He is not somebody who likes to play at right-back and his confidence is not high there.

“We have Jenkinson and we have Koscielny who has been educated as a right-back. Djourou can play there too. Koscielny was always a right back, so he can play there.

“Even [Andre] Santos can play there I think so we have plenty of possibilities.”
