Ramsey: Win will lift us

Ramsey: Win will lift us

19 October 2011 - 22:32

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey believes that Wednesday's Champions League win against Marseille will give Arsenal a much needed confidence boost for the rest of the season.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • It seemed that the Gunners would get no more than one point in France, until Ramsey hit a 92nd minute winner to take Arsenal to the top of Group F.

Speaking to ITV1 after the game, the Welsh midfielder said: "I thought we defended really well today, it was nice to come on and get the winning goal.

"Both teams defended well, but maybe we were a bit anxious in trying to break them down. In the last 10 or 15 mins we applied some more pressure and finally broke through."

"The cross came in and I sort of gambled it might come to the far post. I had a bit of time to think about it, but luckily for me it went in."

Manager Arsene Wenger was also very pleased with the victory. "For the qualification it's a very important goal, for the confidence as well," he said .

"Marseille defended in a very disciplined way, but you could see in the last 15 minutes we started to create opportunities. We showed patience and discipline.

"Everyone questioned how we would cope defensively tonight and I think we did well. The spirit is good and slowly our game becomes stronger."

Wenger also revealed that defender Carl Jenkinson was taken off with a knee problem.

"He had a very good game," added the Frenchman. "He had a little knee problem so we hope it's not serious. He overstretched his knee."
