13 October 2007 - 08:44

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has revealed he tried to stop his club teammate Jamie Carragher from quitting international football. As England head into this qualifier with Estonia without injured John Terry, it is like Jamie Carragher would have played some role in this game.

  • Predicted Chelsea line-up (4-2-3-1) vs Spurs, Gilchrist starts
  • Chelsea midfielder looking forward to London derby vs Spurs

  • Jamie Carragher decided to quit international football in order to concentrate on his club football.

Gerrard, leading the side in Terry's absence, said: "I've got no worries about Sol. He is experienced. His form for Portsmouth has been very good.

"Against Liverpool a couple of weeks ago, he was fantastic. I am sure he will come in and do a great job for England.

"Do I wish Jamie Carragher was still involved with England? I tried my best to keep Jamie involved, not just as a friend but because I still thought he had something to offer the country for a bit longer.

"Jamie has made his decision and we have to respect that but I did try my best to keep him involved."
