Mancini tips Gareth Barry for England armband

11 February 2012 - 14:16

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini thinks that Gareth Barry is the perfect candidate to replace John Terry as England manager. Barry has been the toast of Manchester this year, with the Citizens currently in second place in the league table.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • His manager, Mancini, has tipped Barry as the perfect successor for John Terry.

“Gareth is a very intelligent man, and on the pitch he is a very important player,” said Mancini.

“He understands the situations for me and with England as well because he’s a very intelligent player.

"He could be the England captain. He’s played a lot of times for the national team.

“He’s a good man, a clever man both outside and inside the pitch. He’s a really good player.

“In every team, there are players that don’t seem important, but in the end they prove to be one of the most important players.

“These players are quiet, but can play in every position. They help the manager and their team-mates and are always available. They fight for every ball.

“Gareth is the one player who is like this. He’s very important for us.”
