Redknapp slams referee after FA Cup defeat

Redknapp slams referee after FA Cup defeat

16 April 2012 - 06:22

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp bemoaned the decision to award a controversial goal to Chelsea in yesterday's 5-1 defeat to the Blues in the FA Cup semi-final, and slammed Martin Atkinson for awarding Juan Mata a goal in the 48th minute.

  • Arsenal to swap Gabriel Jesus for Inter Milan star?
  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • Television replays clearly showed that the ball did not cross the line, and Redknapp rued the decision at the end of the game and complained that may have knocked out Spurs from the cup, despite going on to lose 5-1.

Redknapp said: “The second goal was a disaster. It was nowhere near a goal. It was a huge mistake.

“We looked too open after that and they picked us off. It was key. He’s (Atkinson) made a big mistake. I don’t see how he can give the goal. It’s nowhere near over the line.

“There were bodies on the line and the ball couldn’t possibly get over the line. He must have (guessed). He can’t have been sure.

"Goal-line technology has to come into the game. You can’t keep having situations like that."

A number of high profile incidents in the Premier League has seen a spate of club managers request goal line technology in England, and eyefootball will continue to follow this trend over the coming months as the FA reportedly considers potential vendors.
