22 April 2012 - 04:27

Reading have won the Championship title and secured their path for a return to the Premier League. The Royals had drawn 2-2 with Crystal Palace, but Southampton's defeat to Middlesbrough later on in the day ensured that Reading would reach England's top flight with one game left to play.

  • The Southampton surprise defeat to Middlesbrough opened up a four point game at the top of the league between the south coast side and Reading, and subsequently the Royals would be celebrating league success at the Madejski.

In a high tempo game at Reading, Wilfried Zaha opened the scoring after just 14 minutes to put Palace in front.

However, Kaspars Gorkss would ensure that the scores would level up as he pulled one back.

Jason Roberts would then be sent off, but into the second half Adam Le Fondre would put Reading back in control of the game.

Palace's equaliser in the 74th minute through an incredible Glenn Murray strike would wrap things up.

Reading just had a few hours to wait before finding out they would secure the Championship league title, as Southampton last 2-1 to Middlesbrough thanks to a late goal from Merouane Zemmama.
