Liverpool eye new Steven Gerrard contract

30 January 2013 - 12:53

32-year-old team captain Steven Gerrard will sign a new contract at Anfield, according to manager Brendan Rodgers. The England captain's current contract will end after the 2013-2014 season.

  • Chelsea join Liverpool & Man Utd in race to sign 26yo
  • Barcelona identify Arsenal midfielder as key transfer target

  • Gerrard has been with the Reds since his junior years and has rejected several chances to move to another club.

Rodgers is hopeful that the club and player will agree on terms for another deal after the 2014 season.

"As yet I don't believe anything has been done [about a new contract]," Rodgers said. "Steven and I have spoken a number of times. His feeling the last time we spoke was to get through this season and see how that goes. His focus is on really helping the group to go forward.

"There's no doubt that between now and the end of this season the contract will be looked at. With each day that goes on you see the real importance he still has to the club. At 32 years of age, he still looks so fit, strong and you can see his influence on the team."
