Swansea City complete deal to sign Jonjo Shelvey

03 July 2013 - 13:00

Jonjo Shelvey will complete a move to Swansea City from Liverpool. The midfielder, who appears to have fallen out of favour at Anfield, has been told by manager Brendan Rodgers that he is free to leave the club if another team can meet the reported £6m price, which Swansea have matched.

  • Whilst Norwich, Crystal Palace and Hull City were all interested in the 21-year-old England youth international, Swansea City appear to have won the race. Swansea City's coach Michael Laudrup will spend the largest chunk of his transfer budget to secure the signing of Shelvey.

It is understood that Hew Jenkins, the Swansea chairman, contacted Brendan Rodgers about a potential move for Shelvey as far back as January this year. Initially interested in a loan deal for Shelvey, Liverpool told the Welsh side that a permanent deal would be preferred.

Rodgers has now rubber stamped a transfer away from Anfield for Shelvey, and will re-use the finances from the deal to invest in another player.
