Xabi Alonso made Chelsea's top transfer target

06 July 2013 - 07:20

Chelsea are hopeful that a deal can be reached to sign Spain international midfielder Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid. Despite the Blues completing a deal to sign Marco van Ginkel yesterday, Alonso remains Jose Mourinho's number 1 transfer priority this summer.

  • Mauricio Pochettino confirms fresh injury blow for Chelsea star
  • Arsenal want to make four marquee signings this summer

  • Marco Van Ginkel joined the Stamford Bridge side yesterday from Vitesse Arnhem, but according to reports, Jose Mourinho has no plans to push the Dutchman into his first team straight away. Thus, a deal for Xabi Alonso is still considered the most important acquisition that Mourinho will make this summer.

Talk of a move away from Madrid for Alonso has also seen Real's new manager Carlo Ancelotti scour Europe to find a potential replacement. Whilst Marco Veratti of PSG is seen as the best possible candidate for the role in midfield at Madrid, his huge valuation of 34 million Euros could prove to a problem. However, Real have now turned their attentions to signing Real Sociedad midfielder Asier Illarramendi instead. The Spanish under-21 starlet had an inspirational season last year for his current club and attracted the interest of many of Europe's biggest teams, even Arsenal were believed to be keen on the player.

31-year-old Xabi Alonso spent five successful years at Liverpool before making his move to Real, but the Spain international is apparently desperate to return to England and is also looking forward to a potential reunion with Jose Mourinho. Real Madrid are looking for around 15 million Euros to sell Alonso.
