Chelsea manager Mourinho tight lipped on Rooney deal

18 August 2013 - 22:47

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho refused to be drawn on speculation linking the club with a transfer move for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney. The England international, who has yet to hand in a transfer request, is believed to have demanded a move away from Old Trafford this summer.

  • Barcelona identify Arsenal midfielder as key transfer target

  • Whilst Man Utd are stubbornly hanging on to the forward, the player is frustrated with playing second fiddle in United's first team to star striker Robin Van Persie. Rooney came off the bench to assist twice this past weekend in the 4-1 defeat of Swansea.

Chelsea have already had two bids rejected by United for Rooney, but are expected to make a third and final bid for the player this week.

After Chelsea's 2-0 win over Hull City yesterday, manager Jose Mourinho happened to have been asked about the Rooney transfer speculation. The Portuguese manager replied: "We speak to clubs, not players. We'll do it in an ethical way. We don't influence players to behave in a certain way."
