Sunderland sign Fiorentina defender Marcos Alonso on loan

31 December 2013 - 02:43

Sunderland have completed the signing of Fiorentina full-back Marcos Alonso on loan for the rest of the season.

  • Chelsea suffer double injury blow ahead of Villa trip
  • Gabriel Magalhaes to sign new Arsenal deal

  • The 23-year-old Spaniard, who previously plyed his trade for Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League, failed to cement his place in the starting line-up with Fiorentina since his switch from the Reebok in the summer.

Manager Gus Poyet is keen on adding a few recruits of his own during the winter transfer window, and insisted that Marcos would provide sufficient strength to squad, as the club aim to beat the drop zone this season.

"I can confirm Marcos will be with us for the rest of the season on loan, which is something very important for us," Gus Poyet said."I was always looking for a player at left-back or on the left side so I'm delighted he's here.

"It's competition for Andrea Dossena who is the only recognised left-back we have here - they are different sort of players so it helps us with our options."

Alonso will officially join his teammates on New year's day when the transfer window reopens.
