The Most Unique Places to Play Football

14 June 2014 - 15:56

Football is the beautiful game, but what can make it gorgeous is the venue where it’s played. Around the world there are some truly unique football pitches, set in fantastic locations and bringing with it a wide range of new dynamics.

  • Arsenal & Man Utd handed boost in signing French star
  • Man Utd planning to replace Erik ten Hag after FA Cup final

  • So where are the best places on earth to have a kick about? Here is a rundown of some of the most unique pitches on earth:

    Ottmar Hitzfeld Stadium, Switzerland

The highest ground in Europe at 2000 meters (6,561 feet) above sea level, the Ottmar Hitzfeld stadium in Switzerland. Switzerland is a rugged, beautiful country known for its mountains, rivers and cleanliness, not so much for their football though. However, the Ottmar Hitzfeld Stadium is a masterpiece. Found 2,000 metres above sea level, it is the ideal place to train as it’s the highest pitch in Europe, giving you a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains.

The Float @ Marina Bay, Singapore

The Float is almost exactly what it sounds like – a floating football pitch found in Singapore’s Marina Bay. This isn’t just a pretty pitch though, it is fully functional for playing football on. Sure, it may be a bit annoying when the ball goes flying into the water instead of the crowd but for the sake of uniqueness who’s going to argue!

    Football in a Favela

Favelas, or shanty towns, tend to be little throw together houses that aren’t anything special. Normally extremely basic and lived in by the very poor, you wouldn’t expect this to be one of the most unique places to play football. But among those shacks and lean-tos you will often find a lovely crafted and cared for football pitch with two, three or even four story buildings enclosing it.

    Desert Pitch, Australia

When thinking about the best place to play football, a desert may not be the first thing that springs to mind; it may not even come anywhere close to being the top of the list when you think about it! However, some people don’t have any other option than to play in the desert, and these create some of the most hauntingly handsome pitches on earth.

    Adidas Futsal Park, Tokyo

Tokyo has always been ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to technology and urban progression, but the Adidas Futsal Park highlights this perfectly. What do you do when you’re in an urban environment with no room for green spaces? You put it on top of a giant department building of course!

    Maracana, Brazil

Even with all this wonderful scenery around the world, there’s only one place football pros will be aspiring to play this summer, and that’s at Estádio Maracanã, Brazil’s national stadium. Built in the depths of Rio de Janeiro, Maracana’s large oval shape stands out from the typical humdrum of the city with its impressive size and beautiful curved features. Home of the 2014 World Cup, top-class players from all over the world will get the outstanding opportunity to win, lose and draw on this stunning pitch. How it will all unfold is yet to be decided but it’s something that we are all eagerly waiting to see!
