Steven Gerrard retires from international football

21 July 2014 - 14:31

England captain Steven Gerrard has announced that he has retired from international football after winning 114 caps for his country. The England captain won his last cap against Costa Rica at the World Cup and won his first back in 2000 against the Ukraine.

  • Gerrard, the Liverpool captain, is set to play on next season for Liverpool and will focus on domestic duty as opposed to representing his country.

The midfielder's announcement is a huge blow for Roy Hodgson, who had hoped Gerrard would play on after last summer's tournament.

"I have enjoyed every minute of representing my country. It's a sad day for me," the midfielder said.
