Man Utd manager Louis Van Gaal has been experimenting with playing Shinji Kagawa in a deeper role. The Japan international has struggled in recent seasons to find a regular place in United's first team.

  • Whilst Kagawa prefers playing just behind two strikers as an attacking midfield role, Louis Van Gaal has admitted that he has tried playing Shinji in other positions in pre-season.

"I wanted to try him in the No. 6 or No. 8 position in our system in the first two matches, and then I also gave him a chance at No. 10 because he wanted to play in that position. He did it much better than in the two matches before," quipped the Dutch coach.

Kagawa had been linked with a return to his former club Borussia Dortmund in this transfer window.
