The 28-year-old only signed a new four-year deal with the Primeira Liga champions over the summer,  but it is believed that the contract has a £23.5m release clause.

According to The Star, the Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal is a huge fan of the Argentine, who featured for the national side at the World Cup finals in Brazil.

The report adds that Van Gaal wants the talented midfielder to play on the right of his diamond midfield, and will make a move for his services in the New Year.
