Van Gaal explains why Fletcher to West Ham deal fell through

Darren Fletcher's move to West Ham fell through because the Hammers were unwilling to sign the Scot on a permanent deal. Fletcher has now been linked with a move to WBA.

  • Louis van Gaal admits that it was disappointing Fletcher would not be able to leave the club and join the Hammers, telling reporters: "I thought Darren was going to sign a contract.

"But, at the end, they look for a loan and that was not the agreement. I'm only listening to what is now said by West Ham United.

"There is no agreement. We want to help Fletcher and that is my only concern. I am very happy as a manager that he is coming back.

"He is my third captain. He is not playing very much, so I want to help him. I don’t know what is happening there, but the agreement was different on Friday. Now, on Saturday, it is off."
