Arsenal boss Wenger explains Joel Campbell loan exit

01 February 2015 - 07:53

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has explained the reasons behind letting forward Joel Campbell leave. The Costa Rican international has been sent on loan to Spanish side Villarreal.

  • Chelsea striker out for three weeks with knee problem
  • Xabi Alonso provides fresh Moises Caicedo update ahead of Brentford game

  • The forward, who has been monitored by many top Spanish sides, has already been linked with a move to Villarreal in the past and a move was finally pushed through just last month.

Arsene Wenger admits that it was a difficult decision to make, especially with Danny Welbeck currently out through injury.

Wenger quipped: "Joel has extended his contract so he will go to Villarreal and he needed games. Here was a bit obstructed for him because there were too many players in the same position. After six months, he worked very hard every day and didn’t get enough chances to play, so I wanted to give him a chance to continue to get experience at the top level."
