Liverpool are inching closer to the signature of Charlton defender Joe Gomez having triggered his release clause.

The 18-year-old has been linked with a transfer to the Reds in the past few days.

PA Sport now reveals that the Merseyside giants have triggered the youngster's £3.5m release clause, and the move could be finalised this week.

Gomez will be Liverpool's fourth signing for the summer having already agreed deals in principle to sign James Milner, Adam Bogdan and Danny Ings.
