The talented enforcer has played a bit-part role at Los Blancos since his move from Real Sociedad in 2013.

According to The Star, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has not given up on signing the former Spain Under-21 international, as he aims to bring in at least five more players this summer.

Reports in Spain cite that Illarramendi will push for a £15m transfer to the Merseysiders, having heard of their impending interest.

Liverpool have already agreed deals in principle to sign Danny Ings, James Milner and Adam Bogdan.
