The Gunners are believed to have given up on their top target in Karim Benzema after he clarified his desire to win more trophies with Real Madrid.

A report from The Star now claims that manager Arsene Wenger will place a club-record fee of around &pound50m in a desperate attempt to bring Uruguayan star Edinson Cavani to the Emirates.

It is added that Les Parisiens may be open to a transfer agreement given the massive sum spent on the signing of Angel di Maria from Manchester United earlier this summer.

Cavani joined Les Parisiens from Napoli in 2013.
