The Blues are on a desperate search for a new central defender after Everton refused to allow the sale of top target John Stones.

According to The Mail, Jose Mourinho's side had made a formal approach for Brazilian star Marquinhos, which was swiftly rebuffed by Les Parisiens.

It is thought that the West London giants will look elsewhere for new recruits following a dismal start to the league campaign.

Chelsea are currently 13th in the league with just four points.
