Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is said to have had the final word on Nacho Monreal's future at the club.
The Spain international was understood to be closing in on a move to Athletic Bilbao in the summer, having yet to finalize a contract extension with the FA Cup holders.
However, Sport claims that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was never keen on offloading the 29-year-old, who has taken over from Kieran Gibbs to become the club's first-choice left-back.
Reports elsewhere cite that Monreal has been rewarded a new deal on an improved wage structure of around £80,000.
Monreal joined the Gunners from Malaga in 2013.
