Manchester United are apparently looking into a deal for Juventus target and Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano. The Argentine is expected to pursue a challenge elsewhere with manager Luis Enrique eager to freshen up his backline.

Italian publication RAI claims that the Red Devils had made a tentative enquiry for the former Liverpool man after knowing of his desire to return to England.

Mascherano has already agreed terms with Juventus, but the presence of Mourinho could well turn his head to Old Trafford in the coming days.

Nevertheless, the clubs involved would have a tough task negotiating a transfer sum with Barca having placed a hefty &pound61m buy-out clause on his existing deal.

The experienced centre-back has two years left on his Barcelona contract.
