According to ESPN, the Red Devils have held secret discussions with the Saints over a deal for the Portuguese footballer.

The 32-year-old is the preferred choice for the Red Devils with Juventus unlikely to offload Leonardo Bonucci whilst Real Madrid's Raphael Varane would cost a hefty price.

United have already signed Eric Bailly from Villareal this summer, but the need for sufficient back-up has urged Mourinho to get back into the market.

Apart from Bailly, Daley Blind and Chris Smalling remain the only reliable options for the central defensive role.

Fonte was part of Fernando Santos' side that lifted the Euro 2016 title in France last month. He is currently the Saints' longest-serving player having joined from Crystal Palace in 2010.

Southampton value their defender in excess of £8m.
