Man Utd unlikely to make any deadline day moves

Mourinho has insisted he is happy with his squad

Man Utd unlikely to make any deadline day moves

31 August 2016 - 10:17

Manchester United have spent around £150 million on transfers so far this summer, but the Red Devils are unlikely to make any moves on deadline day, according to reports.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • Paul Hirst of the Times is reporting that no further business is expected from Manchester United before the transfer window closes at 11pm BST tonight, despite rumours linking the club with late moves for AS Monaco defender Fabinho and Southampton captain José Fonte.

It has been widely reported in recent weeks that United manager José Mourinho was keen to add an experienced centre-back to his squad to partner impressive new arrival Eric Bailly.

But it is believed that the partnership Bailly has struck up with Daley Blind, coupled with Chris Smalling’s return to fitness, has discouraged Mourinho from dipping into the transfer market for defensice reinforcements.

It has also been reported that Mourinho has been instructed by the board to sell some high earning squad player to reduce the club’s wage bill before any further purchases can be made.

Bastian Schweinsteiger is one player Mourinho has been keen to move on, but the Germany captain has rejected a move to Sporting Clube de Portugal in favour of remaining in Manchester, despite the fact that he is currently being made to train with the under-23 squad.

And Marcos Rojo was another United player linked with a move away from Old Trafford, but the Argentinian international defender’s high wages are thought to have been prohibitive to any interested club striking a deal for the player.

Mourinho has publically insisted that, after signing Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba, he is happy with his squad as it is, and will not seek any further additions.
