Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has insisted that he wanted to keep hold of Serge Gnabry this summer before the youngster turned down talks over a fresh contract. The German footballer linked up with Werder Bremen in a £5m deal on deadline day.
The 21-year-old had impressed for the German national side at the Rio Olympics, and this captured interest from many a clubs in Bundesliga including Bayern Munich.
While speaking on Facebook Live with BT Sport, Wenger admitted that he was reluctant to let go of Gnabry in the first place, but the attacker felt the need to switch clubs in order to attain regular playing time.
"We did not want to get rid of Gnabry. We wanted to keep him," he said. "But he changed his mind and went to Werder Bremen. I think we helped him a lot and if you asked him the question, he would certainly come out and agree with that."
Gnabry made a total of 18 appearances for the Gunners during his time with the senior squad.
