PSG beat Monaco to win French League Cup

Paris Saint Germain beat in form Monaco on Saturday to lift the French League Cup for the fourth consecutive season. Angel Di Maria, Edison Cavani and Julian Draxler all contributed goals for the French giants.

  • Monaco currently lead the French Ligue 1 and were looking to win the League Cup, which would have come as their first major trophy since 2003.

Those hopes took a hit just four minutes into the game when Julian Draxler gave PSG the lead after a good team build up. Monaco were unhappy with the goal as Draxler looked to have finished from an offside position.

Thomas Lemar levelled up the scores with a neat finish from the edge of the box. With the teams tied, it looked like the match would be a close run encounter.

PSG retook the lead before half time, as a fast paced counter attack was finished off from close range by Argentina winger Angel Di Maria. With a 2-1 lead at the break, the Paris club looked confident of retaining their trophy.

A second half brace from striker Edison Cavani gave Paris Saint Germain a comfortable 4-1 victory over their closest challengers this campaign. After lifting the French League Cup, PSG will turn their attention to the league, where they currently sit three points behind beaten finalists Monaco with eight games to go. If they can overcome that deficit, PSG could seal an historic third consecutive domestic treble.
