Seamus Coleman signs new Everton deal

Everton have announced that Seamus Coleman has signed a new long-term deal which will keep him at Goodison Park until the summer of 2022.

  • Mauricio Pochettino confirms fresh injury blow for Chelsea star
  • Arsenal want to make four marquee signings this summer

  • The 28-year-old has been a key contributor at right-back over the years, but he will play no further part in the Toffees season after having sustained a double leg break during Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualifier against Wales two months ago.

Coleman is likely to miss the start of the 2017/18 season owing to his long-term injury, but the Toffees have nevertheless stuck with the plan of offering him an extension.

"I'm delighted to get this signed. I've been here for a long time and it's a special club that means a lot to me," he told the club's official website.

"Everything had been agreed and I was due to sign it after the international break but unfortunately I got the injury.

"The chairman (Bill Kenwright) messaged me the night of my injury and said, 'Don't worry about it because when you come back this contract is still waiting for you'.

"That sums up what the chairman and this club is all about. I want to prove my worth when I come back and show the club were right for rewarding me with this long-term contract."

Since arriving from Irish club Sligo Rovers in the summer of 2009, Coleman has managed to rack nearly 250 appearances across all competitions for Everton.

His performances on the playing field have captured a lot of media attention with clubs of the calibre of Manchester United and Bayern Munich linked with his services.
